Giant Green Anemone

The giant green anemone (Anthopleura xanthogrammica) is found in the waters off the west coast of North America from Alaska to Baja California. It can grow to a size of over 7 inches (18 centimeters) in diameter. The bright green color comes from a symbiotic algae that lives inside the anemone. This algae uses sunlight to make food for both itself and the anemone. Other common names for this species include green surf anemone, giant green sea anemone, giant tidepool anemone, solitary anemone, and rough anemone.
