Club-Tipped Anemone

The club-tipped anemone (Corynactis californica) is not a true anemone but is closely related to them. It is actually a type of colonial anthozoan. They grow in large colonies. Hundreds of them can be seen covering an ocean rock or coral head like a carpet. The individual polyps are small, growing to about an inch (2.5 centimeters) in diameter. The club-tipped anemone is found off the west coast of North America from British Columbia down to Mexico. It is a filter feeder and its diet includes plankton feeder includes crustaceans, larvae, copepods, and invertebrates.
