Butterflyfish Paradise

This image of a coral reef was captured by NOAA photographer Dr. Dwayne Meadows in the waters of the northwest Hawaiian Islands. The fish in are known as pebbled butterflyfish (Chaetodon multicinctus), one of the many species of butterflyfish. Coral reefs act like an oasis in the desert. They provide shelter to a wide variety of marine species. The nook crannies, and caverns formed by the coral provide protection for fish by giving them a place to hide from would-be predators.
