Swarm of Eels

This image of a swarm of eels was captured by NOAA researchers in the waters of American Samoa in the Pacific Ocean. These eels are commonly known as synaphobranchid eels (Dysommina rugosa). This deep water-dwelling eel is native to the western Atlantic Ocean and the eastern central Pacific Ocean. It is found at depths of up to 2,500 feet (775 meters). These eels are often found swarming just off the continental slope. They can reach a maximum size of 15 inches (37 centimeters). So many eels were found at this site that scientists have dubbed it "Eel City."
