Mars, the Red Planet
The planet Mars is seen in one of the best global views of Mars ever obtained. It was created by the U.S. Geological Survey from a number of smaller images taken by the Viking orbiters in 1976. Running across the center of the image is the giant canyon known as Valles Marineris. The dark spots on the left side of the image are two of the Tharsis volcanoes.
