Martian Polar Ice Cap
This close-up image shows the north polar ice cap on Mars. It was taken by the Mars Global Surveyor spacecraft on March 13, 1999. The bright white areas are composed mainly of water ice and frozen carbon dioxide that remains in place throughout the summer season. The darker areas in the image are sand dunes that have been shaped by the wind.
